I got "In Praise of Hatred" by Khaled Khalifa as an advance reading copy. Not having known much about the conflict in Syria during the 's, this book was a bit of an eye-opener.

I found it a little disjointed in some areas but perhaps this was intentional to convey the unrest and chaos both of Syria at the time and in the narrator's life/5.
